AIMS Ireland is a voluntary organisation that was formed in early 2007 by mothers dissatisfied with the Maternity Care System and ready to campaign for changes. Our goal is to highlight and support normal birth and mother-friendly birth practices in Ireland. We are a consumer led, campaign pressure group operating with a self-regulating committee elect and a body of members consisting of parents, consumers, health care professionals, and support group representatives throughout Ireland. Membership is a key element in AIMS Ireland in order to provide support and information to women at a local and national level. AIMS Ireland has received many letters and e-mails from individual women and couples. We reply with confidential, emotional support and encouragement as well as information about choices and rights. We collect data and research which is published on our website to enable parents to make informed decisions concerning every aspect of their maternity care. History AIMS Ireland was set up with the support of The Association for Improvements in the Maternity Services (AIMS UK). AIMS UK has been at the forefront of improving maternity services the past 40 years. They publish a well-respected and widely read quarterly journal which focuses on current issues in maternity care, gives news about ongoing campaigns, and analyses the latest research. Parents and professionals alike find it an excellent source of information. AIMS UK strongly believe that changes for women in childbirth come about as a result of supporting midwives as practitioners in their own right, who, in most cases, should undertake the care of mothers and babies throughout pregnancy, birth and afterwards. They support midwives enabling them to support mothers and babies in their care. AIMS Ireland hope to have the same success in bringing information to Women and families and bringing about improvements in the Irish Maternity System. Future AIMS Ireland has 3 key goals for 2007: Health, Safety & Hygiene Better hygiene standards: In the 2006 Hospitals Hygiene Audit only 1 hospital offering maternity services ranked in the “good” hygiene category. This is reflected in the fact that women giving birth in hospital are often unhappy or concerned with poor hygiene on wards and in bathrooms. Safety of mothers and newborns during their stay in hospital: Particular attention needs to be paid to mothers who may be incapable of safely caring of their newborn(s) following surgery, PPH etc National Guidelines The creation and implementation of National Guidelines for Obstetric procedures. The publication of annual clinical reports and Hospital statistics. A National, Independent, Consultative body to monitor these statistics and to deal with complaints. Mother-friendly Birth Choices Making midwife led initiatives such as domino schemes, MLU’s and homebirths more widely available. To promote and encourage choices for the labouring woman such as reinstating the existing, unused Birth Pool facilities, choice of birthing positions, additional birthing partners and other evidence-based birthing practices.
